Diabetes, hypertension twin enemies of kidney’

Amidst the ever increasing population of people with kidney diseases in the country, the Provost, College of Health Sciences, Osun State University, Professor Olutayo Alebiosu has said the two major enemies of the kidney were diabetes and hypertension.

Professor Alebiosu, in an inaugural lecture he delivered at the university entitled, “Emerging Epidemic of Non-communicable diseases- conspiracy against the Kidney” described hypertension and diabetes as principal “accomplice” in the development of chronic kidney disease.

The don remarking that chronic kidney failure was a devastating medical, social and economic problem for  patients, their families and the country as a whole, stated that community studies put kidney disease in adults between 19 and 30 per cent.

He pointed out that “chronic kidney disease continues to affect people in their productive years and most patients continue to die due to their inability to sustain dialysis treatment in view of the high cost.”

Aside stating that well-recognised risk factors for chronic kidney disease include diabetes, hypertension, and increasing age, family history of kidney disease, cigarette smoking, exposure to heavy metals such as lead and the use of herbal remedies, Professor Alebiosu mentioned that in Nigeria long term ingestion of herbal concoctions, abuse of pain killers, obesity and bleaching lotions, soap and creams were some socio-cultural practices linked with development of kidney disease.

The don stated that considering the damage caused by hypertension on the heart, brain, kidneys and blood vessels, there was the need for physicians to pay more attention to ensure lesser damage to these important body organs in hypertensive patients.

In addition, the expert recommended that pre-employment urine screening and health education will go a long way in educating, increasing awareness and preventing the deleterious complications of uncontrolled hypertension, diabetes and glomerulonephitis

Professor Alebiosu also declared the urgent need to implement prevention strategies that include health education policies geared towards adoption of healthy lifestyle measures that prevent or delay the onset of diabetes and hypertension; strengthening of the health care for people with non-communicable diseases; and integration of non-communicable disease prevention in national programmes for sustainable development.

He stated: “much of the burden of non-communicable diseases such as hypertension and diabetes can be averted through primary prevention and the complementary identification of early stage disease, combined with effective treatment of existing conditions.”

Professor Alebiosu warned:”Unless concerted action is taken, the rising financial burden of non-communicable diseases will reach unmanageable levels.”

IN a case of suspected witchcraft, a 38-year-old woman from Bulawayo's North End suburb gave birth to a 38cm long worm on Sunday morning. The woman, Ms Anna Mbizi, was five months pregnant when she allegedly experienced labour-like contractions and gave birth to a worm in her bathroom.
The bizarre incident happened on Sunday and her boyfriend has reportedly abandoned her.
When reporters visited her at her home yesterday, she seemed weak and was holding what was left of the worm, which was placed in a tin.
She said she was shocked when her doctor toWoman gives birth to a 38cm worm ld her that she was not carrying any baby in the womb and her tummy was mysteriously growing big with no baby inside.
"I am still short of words because I consulted my doctor when I was two months pregnant and was told everything was normal. This was going to be my third baby and I think someone bewitched me," said Ms Mbizi.

She said she suspected that one of her neighbours who owed her $150 was behind her misfortune.
"I really thought I was five months pregnant as I had all the signs and symptoms of a pregnant woman. When I experienced the pains, I thought I was going to miscarry but was shocked when a worm came out," said Ms Mbizi, who separated from the father of her two children.

"My boyfriend was not supportive enough since he learnt of this incident and I am afraid he is going to leave me. He really wanted a baby and now that I delivered a worm I am not his favourite person."

She said her neighbours had advised her to put coarse salt on the worm so that she is not cursed again.

"I put salt on the worm and it shrinked, changing to a liquid like thing and as you can see there is some blood in the residue," said the emotional Ms Mbizi.

The woman's friend, Ms Tafadzwa Shumba, confirmed that her friend had problems with a neighbour over the debt.
"Anna and the woman who owes her $150 have for some time now been exchanging harsh words. They used to threaten each other every time Anna went to ask for the money," said Ms Shumba. Ms Mbizi's doctor, who runs a surgery in the city centre, confirmed the incident.

"The case is very unusual as I also examined the woman after the alleged incident and could not find any baby. The situation left us to believe that the worm had been acting like a baby.

"I examined the woman three months ago and she appeared to be two months pregnant but when she came back on Sunday night nothing indicated that she had been pregnant although there were signs of strain on her uterine tissue," said the doctor.

MEXICO CITY: A Mexican woman is pregnant with nine babies – six girls and three boys – the country’s main broadcaster Televisa reported on Thursday night.

The woman was identified as Karla Vanessa Perez of the northeastern state of Coahuila, which borders Texas. She is currently being treated at a hospital in the state capital Saltillo, the broadcaster said in the report.

Perez, whose age was not given, had fertility treatment leading to the multiple pregnancy, it said.

State-owned news agency Notimex also reported the pregnancy, saying Perez was due to give birth on May 20.

“It’s very early to think of names for the babies,” Perez told Notimex. “First I hope that everything goes well.”

The successful delivery of nonuplets would be one of the highest multiple births ever recorded.

In 2009, a woman in California gave birth to octuplets, sparking worldwide media attention.

Green Tea

Green tea has been known as a healthy beverage for centuries, and a recent scientific article backs up traditional knowledge. Japanese researchers reviewed a large amount of data from many different sources and summarized several conclusions.

Most of their findings were centered around the antioxidant properties of green tea. These are pretty well known, and help increase health and vitality throughout the body, but especially in the blood vessels (it helps keep them elastic).

There's more to it than that, though. Green tea also helps to mineralize (strengthen) the bones, help combat obesity, and even has some anti-viral and anti-fungal properties as well.

Add some green tea in to your daily routine to promote some wellness!

Free Radical Damage

A lot of people have heard of free radicals, but not a lot of people know that they are related to the aging process.

Free radicals are charged particles that cause a lot of damage on the molecular level to basically anything they touch. They have this property due to the fact that they are missing an electron, which makes them highly reactive.

As free radicals contact the surface of various objects, they strip away an electron and destabilize that other molecule. So, in bits and pieces, free radicals tear down the fabric of whatever material they come into contact with.

This is a problem when that material is you. Free radical damage will break down and damage whatever cells they come into contact with, eventually leading to a loss of function. This gradual decline due to free radical damage is one of the major causes of aging.

That's why antioxidants are so popular... they protect you from the effects of free radicals by absorbing them before they can hurt you.

The Skinny on Holiday Weight Gain

To contact us Click HERE
Reports of your holiday weight gain have been greatly exaggerated. Media stories often suggest that the average person gains 7 to 10 pounds between Thanksgiving and Christmas. And in surveys, people say they gain, on average, about five pounds this time of year.

But several studies now show that the average weight gain during the winter holidays is just one pound.

The news isn’t all good. Most people don’t ever lose the pound of weight they put on during the holidays, according to a report in The New England Journal of Medicine. Since the average weight gain during adulthood is about one to two pounds a year, that means much of midlife weight gain can be explained by holiday eating.

For people who are already overweight, the holiday weight news is worse. Although the average gain is only one pound, people who are already overweight tend to gain a lot more. One study found that overweight people gained five pounds or more during the holidays.

And we start packing on that extra pound of holiday weight early in life. Researchers at the University of Oklahoma studied holiday weight gain among college students during the Thanksgiving break. The students were weighed the day before Thanksgiving, then weighed again about two weeks later. The average weight gain for the 94 students was about one pound. Students who were of normal weight gained about a half a pound during the period. Students who were overweight, meaning their body mass index was 25 or more, gained about two pounds.

Holly Hull, the lead researcher on the Oklahoma study, says Thanksgiving marks the beginning of a “high risk” time for the overweight. “I think the number of people who only overeat at the Thanksgiving meal is slim to none,” said Dr. Hull. “The holiday season doesn’t represent one day of overeating. You have this period that extends through the new year where there’s more alcohol, more snacks, more finger foods and appetizers that are energy dense.”

Chiropractic For Stress

Everybody knows that stress is bad for you, and everybody knows chiropractic helps with spinal pain, but not everybody knows that chiropractic also helps the body recover from and deal with stress.

A study done by the University of Conneticut showed that those individuals who had chiropractic care had improved immune respone, likely due to a reduction in the stress response.

As the body is put under stress, the immune system is depressed. This goes for mental or physical stress; the origin doesn't matter.

Chiropractic care relieves the physical stresses that can cause a decrease in the effectiveness of the immune system and restores the body to proper functioning.

Acupuncture Really Does Help Relieve Pain: Study

To contact us Click HERE
TUESDAY, Nov. 30 (HealthDay News) -- Acupuncture alters the way that the brain perceives and processes pain, a finding that suggests the traditional Chinese treatment can effectively relieve pain, according to a new study.

German researchers used functional MRI scans to measure brain activity in 18 people who received painful electrical currents from a device fitted to their left ankle. The researchers then placed acupuncture needles on the participants' right side -- including between the toes, below the knee and near the thumb -- and again inflicted pain in the left ankle.

Without acupuncture, there was major activation of pain-processing areas of the brain. Activation in these areas was significantly reduced when the volunteers received acupuncture.

The researchers also found that acupuncture reduced activation in areas of the brain that control expectations of pain.

The study was to be presented Tuesday at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America, in Chicago.

"Acupuncture is supposed to act through at least two mechanisms, nonspecific expectancy-based effects and specific modulation of the incoming pain signal," lead author Dr. Nina Theysohn of University Hospital in Essen, Germany, said in a news release from the society. "Our findings support that both these nonspecific and specific mechanisms exist, suggesting that acupuncture can help relieve pain."
